James Cameron would be proud, Cocos2D, the brilliant framework for creating 2D games and apps for the Apple platforms (Mac OSX, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad) has released the first version of a 3D extension.
The extension adds support for a full 3D modelling space, including support for 3d mesh models, camera movements and light sourcing. The standard 3D mesh model support includes importers for models from popular 3D packages such as Blender, 3DS Max and Cheetah 3D.
Cocos3D is completely written in Objective-C and is fully integrated into the main Cocos2D framework. The extension comes with a application template, which displays the standard demo “Hello World” in 3D characters and a £D Demo mashup detailing the various modes and options.
it certainly seems to have an impressive set of options and it will be interesting to see how both developers use this in upcoming games or apps, as well as watching how the Cocos3D developers expand this plugin in the months ahead.
